How to Memorise Physics Formulas Without Cramming

Rote memorisation fails in the exam hall. Students who score high do not memorise more β€” they memorise smarter. Six techniques used by toppers, ranked by return on effort.

1. Understand the derivation

Cramming F = ma is fine. Cramming E = -\frac{dV}{dr} without knowing why the minus sign exists is a trap. When you forget the sign, you lose the mark.

Rule: if you cannot recreate the formula from 2–3 lines of derivation, you do not truly know it. Spend 10 minutes deriving. Never forget again.

2. Group formulas by structure, not by chapter

Notice how many physics formulas share the pattern X = k \frac{Q_1 Q_2}{r^2}:

  • Newton's gravity: F = G m_1 m_2 / r^2
  • Coulomb's law: F = k q_1 q_2 / r^2
  • Magnetic force between parallel wires: proportional to 1/r

Recognising the pattern once saves memorising each separately.

3. Dimensional analysis as a self-check

Every formula must be dimensionally consistent. If you write v = u + a in the exam under pressure, dimensional analysis (m/s β‰  m/sΒ²) catches the missing t instantly. Practise this β€” 30 seconds saves a mark.

4. Mnemonic hooks for tricky orders

Some formulas need order memorised:

  • ILATE for integration by parts (Inverse, Logarithm, Algebraic, Trig, Exponential)
  • SOH-CAH-TOA for trig ratios
  • VIBGYOR for visible spectrum
  • KHDBDCM for metric ladder in Maharashtra Board chemistry

Mnemonics beat brute repetition β€” but only if they are short and vivid.

5. Active recall over passive re-reading

Reading a formula sheet 10 times = 10 minutes wasted. Instead:

  1. Write the formula on a blank page from memory.
  2. Check the answer.
  3. Mark the ones you got wrong.
  4. Redo only those the next day.

6. Space the sessions

Cramming 50 formulas the night before an exam gives you ~30% recall next morning. Reviewing 10 formulas each night for 5 nights gives you ~90% recall.

Schedule that works:

  • Monday: new chapter, all formulas.
  • Wednesday: revise the same chapter, focus on ones you forgot.
  • Friday: revise again, add practice questions.
  • Sunday: mock test that includes those formulas.
