How to Use Previous Year Questions (PYQs) the Right Way
Most students collect PYQs and don't use them properly. They either solve mechanically or skim them without solving. Both waste 80% of the value. Here is the correct method.
Why PYQs beat other practice material
Board question patterns repeat. Analysing 10 years of CBSE Class 12 Physics reveals:
- 6β8 questions per year overlap with the previous 3 years (concept-wise).
- 3β4 formulas appear every single year.
- Certain HOTS questions come from a tight pool of ~30 across the last decade.
Solving 10 years of PYQ β solving every likely question you will face.
The correct 4-phase method
Phase 1 β First pass (untimed)
Solve one full paper at your own pace. Skip nothing. Mark the questions you couldn't solve.
Goal: identify weak areas.
Phase 2 β Concept repair
For every question you missed:
- Read the relevant Board Formulas chapter.
- Read the derivation.
- Redo the question from scratch β no peeking.
Move on only when you can solve it cleanly.
Phase 3 β Timed practice
Now solve full papers under exam conditions (3 hours, no notes, no phone). Note where you slow down.
Goal: speed + accuracy.
Phase 4 β Pattern spotting
Look across 5β10 years of papers. Ask:
- Which chapters appear every year?
- Which type of question is asked in 3-mark form? 5-mark form?
- Which HOTS questions repeat with numbers changed?
Insight: the "hard" HOTS in your PYQ book is often identical to one from 2β3 years ago with different numbers. Once you see it, you can never be surprised.
What to do with wrong answers
Do not just re-read the solution. That builds no memory. Instead:
- Wait 24 hours. Return to the problem.
- Re-solve from scratch. No notes.
- If wrong again, that's a genuine weak concept β study the chapter.
- If right, the concept is now yours. Move on.
PYQ β mock test
Mock tests are for stamina and timing. PYQ analysis is for pattern recognition. Both matter, but they are different tools.
- Mocks: 1 every 4β5 days in last month.
- PYQ analysis: throughout the year, 30β45 minutes per session.
Recommended PYQ workload
- Class 10: Solve last 5 years fully. Analyse last 10 years for patterns.
- Class 12: Solve last 7 years fully. Analyse last 15 years for patterns.
That's 20β35 hours per subject. Highest return on time you will ever get.
